The Nihonbashi area has developed as a center of goods as well as money-exchanging businesses over the years and these days is the center of finance, economics, trade and logistics. Nihonbashi is a lively area with a mixture of both historical as well as modern elements. The area which historically used to be a trading area with a wealth of small medicine shops during the Edo period, is literally translated as “Japan Bridge”. This bridge, after which the area is named, has been the kilometer zero marker from where all distances are measured in Japan. These days the area is one of the centers of the pharmaceutical industry, containing the head-offices or branch-offices of major multinationals. While the area is lined with well-established department stores, renowned boutiques and restaurants, it is also buttressed by a more everyday-working-class shopping / eating-out area giving the district a unique flavor.
The Bank of Japan, completed in 1819, is also a famous cultural site
This bridge is a national symbol dating back to the 17th century which shows the area’s rich history. From here all distances are measured in Japan since the Edo period
